TALC (Technical Assistance & Leadership Center) New Vision has announced the initiation of the second grant cycle for A New Vision of Secondary Education in Milwaukee. The funding for the New Vision comes from a five-year $17 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

A New Vision of Secondary Education in Milwaukee is an ambitious attempt to redesign high school education for Milwaukee over the next five years. The plan calls for the creation of forty new small high schools and the conversion of seven large MPS high schools into multiplexes, which are campuses housing several small autonomous schools. Thirty of the 40 new high schools will be created within or in partnership with MPS. The additional 10 will be created in conjunction with Alliance for Choices in Education (ACE). Schools proposed may operate within MPS, in partnership with MPS, or outside of MPS through a charter authorized by UW-Milwaukee, the Milwaukee City Council, or MATC.

Informational sessions for those interested in applying for a planning grant in the second grant cycle of “A New Vision of Secondary Education in Milwaukee” will be held. Those interested may choose between Wednesday, February 4th at Bay View Public Library, 2566 S. Kinnickinnic Ave., and Thursday, February 5th at Washington Park Library, 2121 N. Sherman Blvd. Sessions start promptly at 3:30 p.m. and last approximately 1–1/2 hours.

This second grant cycle is for those who have done some pre-planning with a goal of opening a new small high school with a student population of 400 or less for the 2005–2006 school year.

For those not yet ready to begin planning, please request information on TALC New Vision’s “Possibilities” workshops. Contact the TALC New Vision office for more information by calling 414.931.6225 or email TALC.
