Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS)

No other major urban district’s mission and goals emphasize so thoroughly the significance of parent choice in an educational marketplace that features diverse varieties of public education options.

The Milwaukee Public Schools will ensure that maximum educational opportunities are provided for all students to reach their highest potential so that:

  1. Students achieve their education and employment goals, and
  2. Parents choose the Milwaukee Public Schools to educate their children

The goals of the Milwaukee Public Schools are to improve:

  1. Student achievement
  2. Student success in education and employment
  3. Family satisfaction, as measured by their choices in the educational marketplace

Superintendent’s Commitment

Milwaukee Public Schools’ commitment to the New Vision of Secondary Education is best summarized by Superintendent William G. Andrekopoulos, who launched the district’s High School Redesign Initiative and now leads the commitment to develop new small high schools.

“We’ve changed principals, we’ve changed teaching staffs, we’ve tried different reform models, but the bottom line is that we are still getting the same result,” Superintendent Andrekopoulos informed the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “We have to change the whole system now.”

As the major stakeholder in the New Vision effort, MPS will:

  • Authorize expenditures of Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation funds to affect MPS enrolled students;
  • Identify comprehensive high schools that will become multiplexes;
  • Authorize requests for proposals (RFPs) issued by TALC New Vision for the creation of 30 or more new small schools;
  • Develop a staff recruitment strategy for small MPS high schools;
  • Approve planning and implementation sub-grants for multiplexes and new small schools;
  • Coordinate district-wide leadership improvement, accountability, and performance plans with the effort to reorganize existing schools and create new small schools; and
  • Ensure graduation requirements and standards are aligned with new models emerging from the multiplex and new small school development effort.
